Sport of the week: SpikeBall
Written By: McLain Martin
As Football, Soccer, and Baseball take over mainstream sports broadcasting channels, people take for granted the less well-known activities. In this new segment of the Clawprint News, we look at the sports that have been on the steady rise in popularity in recent years. The sport we have chosen for this week is SpikeBall.
This easy to learn, yet hard to master, sport requires nothing more than a ball and a small trampoline. The idea is simple: ‘Spike’ the ball onto the trampoline in such a way that the enemy players can’t spike it back. Each team (2 players) has three combined hits to spike the ball back onto the trampoline. If the ball hits the ground while it's your turn to spike, your team loses a point.
In the past ten years, SpikeBall has caught hold of high school and college students across the globe. Leagues have formed and a championship is now being held each year. The reason for this sports popularity is due to its simplicity. The court only requires roughly 10-20 feet of room to play, which means it could be played anywhere-from your bedroom to a sprawling beach.
The diversity of this sport has been depicted via Instagram where it features athletes playing this sport with a vast array of augmented rules. A recent post shows four college students playing in a pool with floats attached to the sides of the trampoline. On another note, when winter struck, teens lit their spike ball on fire and played to keep their hands warm during a blizzard. *DISCLAIMER- Clawprint News cautions against this act as it can cause severe burns! *
For players and fans alike, watching this sport grow into what it is today has been truly remarkable. All in all, if you are looking for a new sport to play with a small group of friends, or a sport to dive into, SpikeBall is a great place to begin. With a growing fanbase and thousands of different ways to reinvent the game, it is a sport that will keep you on your toes for hours to come.

Grizzly Grapplers Fight for State
Written By: Emily McPhail
The Grizzly Grapplers wrestling team are headed to state once again, after winning the region champion title for the third year in a row! Before their departure, they participated in their annual Creekview tradition, bleaching their hair blond. As they headed to Macon, their drive and determination to win the state title was in the air and had no intentions of walking away empty handed. However, as they through the bracket and made it to semifinals, the team faced a heartbreaking two-point loss against Pope High School.
But! The team refused to walk away with nothing and came back with a hard 35-30 victory against Cambridge to win 3rd in the state! While there was some inevitable disappointment among the team, they still came home with a trophy for the fourth year in a row and remain a dominant force on the mat. From the school and the Creekview Clawprint, we all stand with the Grizzly Grapplers and congratulate them on another fantastic season!

MLB Postseason Race
Written by Blake Turner and Brice Trout
It’s that time of year again... August. The season starts to turn from summer to fall. The new school year starts up, and exhilarating football games begin. And in the midst of all this change, the Major League Baseball playoff race begins. The Race for October begins now. For the moment, many teams from both Leagues have a great chance of making the playoffs. In the National League, the Los Angeles Dodgers seem to have secured the 1 seed by leading the National League West division and the whole National League by a fair amount of games.
Behind them, the Atlanta Braves are looking to be the 2nd seed as they are currently winning the National League East. The tightest race for the moment is taking place in the National League Central division. In the NL Central division, three teams, the Chicago Cubs, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Milwaukee Brewers are separated by just two games. One fellow Creekview student, Ryan Carmody, predicts that, “The Cardinals will win the NL Central because the Brewers and the Cubs don’t have reliable bull pens to close out games.” Furthermore, the tight playoff race in the National League will most likely boil down to the end of the regular season in late September as we see who will come out as division winners and who will be able to take the highly contested Wildcard spots.
The American League race might just be equally as exciting as the National League race. In the American League, two teams, the New York Yankees and the Houston Astros, have separated themselves from the rest. The Yankees and the Astros are both 4 games in front of the next closest team, the Cleveland Indians. The Indians are involved in a close race in the AL Central against the Minnesota Twins in which both teams are separated by just two games. The MLB playoff race sets the stage for an impending tournament. The playoff race represents the intensity and fire that all the teams bring to baseball and provides intriguing yet fun sports entertainment that never fails to impress. The Race for October is only getting tighter as the regular season comes closer to a close.
